“無著菩薩到「雞爪山」洞，專修彌勒法。
修了三年，未見成績，心生厭倦而出山，路上遇到一位老婦，欲將鐵杵磨成針，菩薩就問道：「這怎能磨成針？」老婦答：「具足堅志力，有志者竟成，雖難仍堅忍，高山亦能摧。」聽了這番啟發的話，菩薩深感汗顏又回山修行。
“再過三年仍無消息，於是倦意複萌而欲出山門，途中遇雨，見雨水竟能滴水穿石，心生慚愧又入山修行。
“又經三年仍無動靜，再出山時，鳥的羽毛已遍滿山谷，深深感歎，再發心四度專研，又經過三年，前後共計十二年之久，仍毫無進展而心灰意冷。
“出山時，途中見一隻將死的母狗，狗的上半身，已全被蛆蟲咬食而腐爛，母狗現出疼痛難忍即將死去的慘狀，菩薩生起憐憫的悲心，想除去狗身上的蛆蟲，又怕蟲因此而死，若不除蛆，狗亦將會死。
“於是割下自身的肉，用舌頭舐取蛆蟲，如此蟲和狗皆得以存活。再舔時，母狗已不見，只見一道金光，光明莊嚴的彌勒菩薩呈在眼前。
“無著菩薩感動又略帶抱怨的說：「噫嘻！唯一救怙尊，雖經千苦不獲見，何故甘露雪海中，萬苦煎熬始降霖。」彌勒菩薩說道：「猶如焦芽與敗種，天雖降雨不生芽，若無賢善與福德，諸佛雖臨有何益。自始至終我都在你面前，因你有業障阻礙，所以看不見我，現在你生起大悲心，並且有具體的行動，因此業障得以清淨，才能見到我，你如果不信，把我背在肩上去市集繞一下，看大眾見到我否？」
“無著於是背著彌勒菩薩前往市集，並請人們證明，問了好多人「你看到我肩膀上的菩薩麼？」大家都奇怪的看他。好久啊，只有一個老婦說：「你肩膀上扛著一隻母狗。」
“彌勒菩薩問無著：「既然現在你見到我了，你有什麼請求？」無著說想要聽彌勒菩薩講法，於是抓住彌勒菩薩的袈裟被帶到兜率天，從彌勒處得到《瑜伽師地論》並傳述後世。最後無著離開娑婆世界回到了兜率內院，因為他原本就是從兜率天下來的。”
